VMS Front Under the same ownership as Thinnarat Music, Vientiane Music School (VMS) is located on Rue Chao Anou. To get to the school go down Boulevard Khounboulom, go right on Rue Setthathirath and right again on Rue Chao Anou. VMS will be on left across from Seng Lao Hotel and Phatoke Laoderm.

With close to 300 enrolled students, VMS is one of the largest music schools in Vientiane. Children may begin learning an instrument at VMS when they are 6 years old.

Classes at VMS are kept to sizes of one to four students to maximize instruction time for each student.

Classes usually meet one hour at a time, twice a week. However, schedules can be prepared to work around anyone’s schedule.

Below is a list of the instruments taught at VMS. Unless noted, the price of instruction is 250,000 kip per month (8 hours of instruction):

  • Electric Guitar/Bass (300,000 kip/month)

  • Drum (300,000 kip/month for 12 hours)

A 10% discount is given to anyone signing up for a three month term of instruction.

The quality of instruments sold at Thinnarat far surpasses the cheap knock-offs to be found at the Morning Market and other places in town. You won’t find any premium instruments here (ie. Phatoke Laoderm offers an excellent opportunity to experience selected Lao foods while watching an elaborate show consisting of traditional Lao dances, songs and instruments.

Phatoke Laoderm has one show daily starting at 7:00 pm.

Located in the Senglao Hotel in the heart of the Namphu River area, it is easily found by even the most novice of travelers.

Phatoke Laoderm’s website offers a full menu of the Lao food available as well as a listing of all 19 performances featured in the show.

Admission to the show is priced at $12 per person. Reservations are requested.
